Did you know that sleep apnea can be caused by factors that are out of your control, including genetics? In fact, males over the age of 40 are often at the highest risk for sleep apnea, regardless of their overall health or fitness. To make matters worse, some forms of sleep apnea occur in your brain, which can potentially be linked to a recurrence in your family history.

Central sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder of irregular breathing patterns linked to failed signals from your brain to your chest muscles while you sleep. Although they are common, sleep apnea disorders can be fairly serious. Another common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when your airway is blocked or impeded while you sleep, failing to allow the correct amount of air to breathe properly. Both forms can cause high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes to occur.

Some common causes of sleep apnea include a deviated septum, an enlarged tongue or enlarged tonsils, a recurrence of sinus and allergy problems, a small jaw, and even nasal blockages. Speak with your dentist if your think you may be suffering from sleep apnea to determine which treatment methods are right for you.
